Wildland Fire in the Appalachians Conference

October 8, 2013–October 10, 2013

The Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers and Scientists and the Association for Fire Ecology are hosting a conference October 8‐10, 2013 at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in downtown Roanoke, Virginia.

Wildland Fire in the Appalachians: Discussions Among Managers and Scientists is designed for anyone with an interest in wildland fire in the Appalachian region, and promises to be unique in its approach to sharing information. The objective of the conference is for fire managers and researchers to learn from each other so they can better understand and work together on problems specific to the highly diverse Appalachian Mountains. The conference design is unique: it is neither a research symposium nor a managers’ meeting, but rather a synergy of both.

The conference includes three concurrent mini-conferences. Over 40 invited speakers will discuss research updates and management experiences. Researchers will discuss plant and wildlife ecology, fire history, invasive plants, season of burning, and other topics. Managers will share experiences on how to apply fire to the landscape, how to work with media and the general public, and updates to fire management tools such as smoke prediction models, LANDFIRE, FRCC, and IFT-DSS.  A highlight will be success stories from programs such as the Fire Learning Network, state Prescribed Fire Councils, and interagency cooperation.  A field trip on the third day will share manager’s experiences in applying research results on the ground.

Register by July 9, 2013 for a discounted fee.

Call for posters. The program committee is also requesting abstracts for posters on any topic related to wildland fire in the Appalachian region. Poster topics can be based on completed or ongoing research, or they can describe management experiences. The deadline for abstract submissions is June 28, 2018.

In addition, the Shortleaf Pine Initiative will hold a free, one-day workshop at the same location on October 11, the day following the conference. Detailed information will be posted to www.shortleafpine.org as finalized. For more information, email info@shortleafpine.net.
