Effectiveness of the forest stewardship program in conserving natural resources on private lands in Indiana

Informally Refereed

Abstract

Forest ecosystems are a dominant component of the nation's landscape but are a challenge to manage because of diverse ownership and policy objectives. Privately owned, nonindustrial lands comprise nearly half of all forests in the United States (42 percent); nearly 10.3 million citizens own 393 million acres. A number of landowner assistance programs are designed to help conserve natural resources on private lands in the United States. However, little research has been done that evaluates the impact of these programs on the conservation of natural resources on private lands. In this study we focused on the Forest Stewardship Program, which is termed the Classified Forest Program (CFP) in Indiana.
