Effect of fertilizer treatments on an alkaline soil and on early performance of two bottomland oak species

Abstract

Many acres of once productive Missouri farmland along the Missouri River are being planted to bottomland hardwoods. Once trees become established on many of these sites, however, most show symptoms of chlorotis due to high pH levels (>7.5) in soil. Six treatments containing combinations of iron (Fe), sulfur (S), and nitrogen (N) were tested for their effectiveness in ameliorating soil conditions to stimulate nutrient uptake and growth of 2-year-old planted pin oak (Quercus palustris) and swamp white oak (Q. bicolor).
